I'm just wondering, what do you eat when you get hungry late at night? Any advice on what to snack on? Or even if not late at night...what kinds of snacks do you rely on to keep you from grabbing that gallon of ice cream out of the freezer and a spoon?
UPDATE! Forget the peaches or mandarin oranges. As soon as I reminded myself that I had those VitaTop Velvety Chocolate muffin things, I HAD to have one. Here are the nutrition facts:
Good late night snacks.. baby carrots.. they're sweet.. sweet snow peas.. also quite sweet.. or.. when you feel that feeling coming on.. go drink a big glass of water..
ReplyDeleteI've been buying these 60% Coco square candies and I eat one of those every day or every other day... coco is good for you.. loaded with antioxidants....!!
I haven't had the sweet snow peas. I'll have to check those out. The carrots are a good idea but if I need something sweet, the coco squares will have to be the way to go!
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking I could have one of my VitaTop Velvety Chocolate muffins if my sweet tooth needs it!
My friend Lisa said: I like to do a cup of high fiber cereal with some fruit and splenda. Cures the crunch and sweetness while making me feel full and giving dairy! Works great!
ReplyDeleteShe also told me that she likes Fiber One or Special K cereals.
Here's Connie's suggestion: Healthy - nuts (preferably walnuts or almonds), any fruit, my favorite snack currently is a banana with a tablespoon of peanut butter, 85% cocoa bars by Green and Black's - an acquired taste but you do get used to it and it helps to tame th...e sweet tooth, sauteed sun-dried tomatoes. Stay away from sugar. Let fruit or dark chocolate take care of that. Nuts are perfect for being a protein and a carb.

More info about the sun-dried tomatoes from Connie: In Publix produce, there is a pouch by California Sun-Dry Julienne Cut. I saute in EVOO (Tbsp or so) until they just start to blacken or caramelize. Usually I do this in pan after I fry eggs. Eat half of it for breakfast and save the other half for a snack during the day. I leave it out on the counter so it does not get hard.
More info about the coco from Connie: Bloom is where I find the best 85% cocoa - brand is Green & Black's. Has the consistancy of a regular chocolate candy bar. It has little sugar and is heart healthy.
Here are some other ideas I got from my friends at Whattoexpect.com:
ReplyDelete- Popcorn, yogurt with fruit.
- Carrots and hummus, raw almonds, an apple (seems obvious but so good for you...), lowfat yogurt, a serving of lowfat cottage cheese (great source of calcium and protein)...Oh btw if you have to have ice cream...ben and jerrys makes really good frozen yogurt that's relatively low fat. My face is phish food. The key is to just take a few bites to satisfy that sweet craving without eating the whole thing. So before you eat any, tell yourself you'll put it away after 4-5 bites (or whatever works for you) and stick to it. :)
- yogurt, rice cakes, pre-made salads with no dressing, any fruit really-I love granny smith apples butu hate having to bite into it since I have really sensitive teeth so I got one of those apple slicers that cores it at the same time at walmart and I do that then set the pieces out of the counter on a place and munch on them all day. Also- if you love ice cream try buying the frozen sorbet! They are 100% fruit and SO good!
When I was pregnant, all I craved were sweets, specifically fruit. I thought, "this is great! I can eat fruit all day long and still be eating healthily!". That's all well and fine...until I gained 10 lbs in my 4th month! Fruit is very high in sugar, don't forget. I also used to be an ice cream fanatic late at night! So my suggestion if you have a sweet tooth is to switch to sugar free popsicles. I ate 3 or 4 a night when I was pregnant once I cut out the fruit. And I only gained 25lbs during pregnancy, so the popsicles definitely are a good alternative. Just remember that although fruit isn't high in fat, it is high in sugar and sugars are what sticks around for a while. :) Good luck!
ReplyDeleteP.S. - I'm from your WTE board. :)
Thank you Elizabeth! Your information is really helpful, and it's a great point about fruit. I think that basically too much of anything, even if it's "good," can be a bad thing!
ReplyDeleteCynthia said: I have a big sweet tooth, so I load up my shelves with the 100 calories cookies and snacks, and Weight Watchers snacks as well. Also fruit in between meals to feel up especially apples.
ReplyDeleteKellie said: Some of my favorite snacks are soy nuts and white cheddar rice cakes...my mom had found a low calorie caramel dip too, that went great with apples. It was very yummy! Skinny cow has some delicious ice creams for those sweet tooth cravings and they are portioned out so you don't eat too many.
Leslie said: I snack on Edamame there are also really good for your M-cycle & my new favorites are Popchips (I have the salty sweet tooth) so I buy the 100 cal Almond Chocolate packs, & Nautre Valley Oats n' Dark Chocolate bars. I'm followibg Weight Watchers. I notice if I make myself write down what I eat I don't eat the bad stuff, I'll eat fruit to hold me over.
muffin top.... bwahahahaha!
